PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Primed for Road Game at Concord

THE OPENING TIP 
Davis & Elkins women's basketball returns to action this weekend for a road matchup at Concord on Saturday afternoon. D&E will look to avenge a disappointing 68-57 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan last time out.
 
Concord is set for its first matchup since February 6 and enters at 5-5 on the season. Davis & Elkins posted an exciting 67-65 win against the Mountain Lions in the first meeting of the season on January 16.

  • How It Happened: Head coach Rachel Swartz earned her first career victory as D&E slipped past Concord, 67-65. Jamiyah Johnson posted a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES
  • Jamiyah Johnson made her return to the lineup on February 10 after missing the previous three games. She notched her fourth consecutive double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds against the Bobcats.
  • Johnson enters the weekend eighth in the league in scoring average (18.4) and second in rebounding average (15.3). Collectively, Davis & Elkins ranks eighth nationally in rebounds/game (46.73) and 10th in offensive rebounds/game (16.8).
  • The Senators clawed back in the second half to take a lead with 1:18 remaining in the second half in their 67-65 home win against Concord on January 16.
  • Jessica Eadsforth-Yates is second on the team in scoring (8.9) and first in minutes (29.6). She has posted double figures in each of the last two games and continues to be one of the primary point guards for the Senators.
  • Allie Taylor has been in the starting lineup each of the last four games, posting 13.0 points/game and 7.25 rebounds/game over that span.
  • While still last in the league in three-point shooting, the Senators have made 12 shots from distance over the last two contests. D&E had converted just 22 three-point attempts over the previous nine games.

SCOUTING CONCORD
  • Concord is 5-5 on the season, posting all of its wins at home in 2021. The Mountain Lions last played on Saturday, February 6 in a 55-53 road loss to Notre Dame (Ohio).
  • Riley Fitzwater is among the top players in the league, ranking fifth in scoring average (19.6), third in rebounding average (12.3), first in field goal percentage (.667) and first in blocks/game (5.2).  
  • Fitzwater, who leads the nation in blocked shots, had eight rejections in the first meeting with Davis & Elkins earlier this season. She poured in 14 points and snared 21 rebounds against the Senators on January 16.
  • Maggie Guynn is second on the team in scoring (12.0 PPG) as one of three players to play and start in all 10 games for the Mountain Lions.
  • Concord used an 18-0 scoring run to cap a 95-54 win against Alderson Broaddus on February 3. The 41-point margin of victory was the largest for Concord since joining Division II in 1994-95.
  • Kenny Osborne, now in his 21st season at Concord, is just six victories shy of 300 for his career.
