INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College fell to West Virginia State, 90-50, in a Mountain East Conference women's basketball matchup Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center.
West Virginia State (14-11, 8-9 MEC) took control early, jumping out to a 23-8 lead after the first quarter and extending the advantage to 50-16 by halftime. The Yellow Jackets forced 30 turnovers and converted them into 28 points while also dominating the glass with a 56-43 rebounding edge.
Davis & Elkins (2-21, 1-16 MEC) was led by LaChazity Shaver, who finished with nine points, four rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Jackie Wright added eight points and five rebounds, while Kylie Morris chipped in six points and two steals.
The Senators struggled offensively, shooting 30.8% (20-of-65) from the field and missing all nine of their three-point attempts. Meanwhile, West Virginia State capitalized on its opportunities, knocking down 13 three-pointers and dishing out 22 assists on 33 made field goals.
D&E made some adjustments in the second half, outscoring West Virginia State 34-30 in the final two quarters, but the first-half deficit proved too much to overcome.
