Davis & Elkins College Athletics is committed to developing excellence in student-athletes, coaches and staff through education, engagement, character and competition.
The Mission of Senator Nation
Senator Nation strives to unite D&E alumni, fans, parents and community business partners in assisting the College in its intercollegiate athletic endeavors.
Initiated in 2016, the athletic teams at Davis & Elkins compete annually for The Senator Cup. The team with the highest combined point total in the four pillars of Education, Engagement, Character and Competition, will be awarded the Cup. Each team that captures the highest point total in each individual pillar will be provided the Pillar award for that pillar.
Investing in Excellence
Primary Goals of Senator Nation
- Support and promote excellence in academics, intercollegiate athletics, and preparing student-athletes for life after Davis & Elkins College.
- Financial contributions to compliment the College’s support of the D&E athletic program with scholarships, capital improvements, team operations, and special initiatives (first-generation students, diversity, gender equity, etc.).
- Generate student, alumni, faculty, and community interest in D&E athletics.
- Promote active alumni engagement with Senator Nation.
- Connecting D&E alumni with current student-athletes to foster mentoring and networking opportunities.
- Honor Davis & Elkins College student-athletes and valued friends of Senator Athletics.
D&E Athletic Program Commitment to Senator Nation
- Student-athletes, coaches, and staff of D&E’s 18 men’s and women’s sports vow to build competitive programs that display sportsmanship, integrity and bring honor to the Senator Nation.
- Actively engage with the Elkins community and the Mountain Highlands of West Virginia.
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average for the athletic program of 3.00 or better each semester.
- Maintain 90% or better graduation rate for the athletic program to maintain the NCAA Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence.
While athletic success is often measured by wins-losses, times and individual finishes, our athletes personify the ultimate honor of academic and graduation success in defining the true meaning of STUDENT-athlete.
Juggling the intense academic rigors of Davis & Elkins College, team practices, fitness training, and games at home and on the road, the athletic program comprised of over 400 D&E student-athletes combine to achieve over a 3.00 grade point average which is higher than the general student body.
Senator athletics prepares student-athletes for engagement and success in life after D&E and exemplifies this by earning its third consecutive NCAA Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence. The award is provided to athletic programs with graduation rates of 90% or better. Since the award’s inception in 2011, less than 10 percent of the 300 NCAA DII athletic programs earn this distinction annually.
