ELKINS, W.Va. -- Davis & Elkins slipped past Concord, 67-65, on Saturday afternoon at the McDonnell Center. Head coach
Rachel Swartz picked up her first win at the helm of the Senators following the narrow victory.
The win improved D&E's record to 1-2 on the year (1-2 MEC), while Concord's record is even at 2-2 (2-2 MEC).
Jamiyah Johnson paced the Senators with 20 points and 16 rebounds for another double-double. The senior recorded 18 of her points and 13 of her rebounds in the second half alone.
Jessica Eadsforth-Yates had eight points, six assists and five rebounds. The balanced team effort also saw
Amiah Banks notch nine points, while
Peyton Mohler and
Sydney Nestor had six each.
Concord led 48-44 after three quarters and 58-53 with 6:32 to go, but Davis & Elkins remained within striking distance.
Jamiyah Johnson converted a three-point play in the lane with 2:16 left to get to within one at 61-60, with 2:16 left.
Trailing 63-62 with 1:31 to go,
Marissa Berlin's layup gave the Senators the lead with just over a minute to play. Concord had chances on the offensive end, but could not get a bucket. The teams traded scores at the free throw line, and Concord had a chance in the final seconds, but could not get the game-tying jumper to go down.
The Senators held a 23-9 edge in points off turnovers and outscored the Mountain Lions in each of the final three quarters.
Jaisah Smith led Concord with 16 points. Riley Fitzwater had 14 points and pulled down 21 rebounds to go along with eight blocks. Maggie Guynn tossed in 14 more for the Mountain Lions.
Davis & Elkins is back home on Wednesday, January 20 for a matchup with Charleston (W.Va.) at 5:00 PM.
