PREVIEW: D&E Women Look to Hand #9 Charleston (W.Va.) First Loss on Wednesday

THE OPENING TIP 
Davis & Elkins women's basketball looks for its second consecutive win on Wednesday night, welcoming ninth-ranked Charleston (W.Va.) to the McDonnell Center for a 5:00 PM tipoff. The Senators persevered for a 67-65 win against Concord last time out, while the Golden Eagles pushed their season-opening winning streak to four games with a 67-62 road win against Notre Dame (Ohio). Charleston enters as the top-ranked team in the most recent D2SIDA Atlantic Region Rankings on January 18.

  • How It Happened: After a slow start to the game, both sides found their rhythm in a contest that went down to the wire as Davis & Elkins ultimately dropped a 58-51 road matchup to Charleston (W. Va.).

DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES
  • Jamiyah Johnson has been a consistent scoring presence this season, logging 20 points in each of the first three games. She is just 39 points shy of 1,000 for her career entering the week.
  • Johnson, who ranks sixth in the league in scoring average, is posting a double-double per contest for the Senators. She is averaging 12.3 rebounds/game after recording 14 and 16, respectively, in the last two outings.
  • Amiah Banks is second on the team in scoring (11.0 PPG) after coming off the bench in all three games this season. Part of a deep lineup for head coach Rachel Swartz, 11 players average 10 minutes/game or more.

  • Wednesday will feature a pair of first-year head coaches with Tianni Kelly leading the UC women's program. A 2014 graduate of Charleston, Kelly most recently served as an assistant coach for the Valdosta State Blazers women's basketball program.
  • The Golden Eagles handed Glenville State its first regular season home loss since the 2016 season.
  • Most recently, Charleston placed three players in double figures and held a 48-37 edge on the glass in a 67-62 win against Notre Dame (Ohio). The Golden Eagles struggled offensively, missing all 15 attempts from beyond the arc.
