CHARLESTON, W. Va. – After a slow start to the game, both sides found their rhythm in a contest that went down to the wire as Davis & Elkins ultimately dropped a 58-51 road matchup to Charleston (W. Va.) on Wednesday night at the Wehrle Innovation Center.
Jamiyah Johnson had 12 of her 13 points in the second half and secured 12 rebounds for her nation-leading 20
th double-double of the season for Davis & Elkins.
Sydney Nestor posted 12 points and seven rebounds for the Senators, while
Jay Kilpatrick was also in double figures with 11 points.
Peyton Mohler notched eight points and four rebounds, while
Jessica Eadsforth-Yates finished with five points.
Charleston earned its seventh consecutive win to stay within striking distance of first place in the MEC standings. The Golden Eagles were powered by the duo of Brooklyn Pannell and Anna Hayton, finishing with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Erykah Russell just missed a double-double behind eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles lead for just over 30 minutes of the game with D&E keeping things close throughout the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Offense was difficult to come by in the early going of the first quarter with D&E leading 4-2 at the opening media timeout with 4:54 left in the frame. Eadsforth-Yates and Nestor scored for D&E in the opening stretch. The defensive affair continued into the first quarter and Johnson was forced to take a seat with her second personal foul. Dakota Reeves converted a pair of foul shots with three seconds left in the opening frame to lift Charleston in front, 7-6, trough the first 10 minutes.
- Charleston converted consecutive buckets in the second quarter for an 18-13 lead. Nestor drove inside for two to trim the deficit to 18-15, but the Golden Eagles answered with an 8-0 run to move back in front, 26-15. Mohler converted her second trey of the half at 1:37 and Johnson notched her first point of the half at the foul line with 27 seconds left to make the score 30-21 in favor of the Golden Eagles heading into the halftime break.
- D&E opened the second half on a 7-0 run, with foul shots from Kilpatrick and Johnson making it 30-28. Charleston posted a 5-0 run to move the advantage back to eight at 40-32 after a fastbreak hoop with 5:33 left in the third. A clutch jumper from Johnson made it a three-point game and kept the momentum going for the Senators at 40-37, part of a larger run that handed the edge back to D&E. Rachel Bolyard made a long two for a 42-40 edge before Charleston tied the game at 42 at the end of the third, which proved to be the final lead of the game for the Senators.
- Charleston posted the first six points of the fourth quarter before the Senators worked it back to a two-point deficit with a pair of foul shots from Johnson. After a missed D&E three from the corner, Charleston converted a three on the other end, just the second of the night, for a 51-46 lead.
- Johnson recorded a rebound, put-back and drew the foul, ultimately making the free throw to cut the deficit to 53-51 in the fourth. Hayton responded for UC with a left-handed bucket of her own to move the Golden Eagles to a 55-51 lead with just around two minutes remaining. Pannell canned a clutch three from the right side to close the game at 58-51.
GAME NOTES
- Davis & Elkins took care of the basketball throughout the night, committing just 12 turnovers one game removed from 28 giveaways against Notre Dame College.
- Six of Johnson's 12 rebounds were offensive, right along her season pace that leads the nation.
- Neither side could get their offense going to start the contest, with D&E shooting just 25% from the floor and Charleston converting the same percentage. Both teams were an identical 3-for-12 from the field over the first 10 minutes.
- The Golden Eagles held a 25-14 edge on the boards in the first 20 minutes.
- D&E used runs of 8-0 and 7-0 in the third quarter to tie the score through three.
