PREVIEW: D&E Women Look for First Win on Wednesday at Glenville State

THE OPENING TIP
Taking the court for the first time since last Thursday, Davis & Elkins women's basketball hits the road to take on the high-powered Glenville State Pioneers from the Waco Center. The Senators battled back from a 19-point first quarter deficit before falling just short to Frostburg State, 73-72, in the season opener.

Glenville State, winners of four-straight regular season titles, was picked atop the MEC Preseason Poll released earlier this month. The Pioneers bean the season with a resounding 126-82 win against West Virginia State before falling to Charleston (W.Va.), 91-86, on Sunday.

  • How It Happened: Davis & Elkins struggled in the second quarter in a loss to Glenville State at the Waco Center. Jamiyah Johnson notched a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Glenville State extended its winning streak to 16 games at the time.

DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES
  • Jamiyah Johnson posted 20 points and seven rebounds for the Senators in the opener, scoring 12 points in the third quarter alone. She went 6-of-8 from the floor in just 7:29 of the third period.
  • The Senators battled back against Frostburg State in the second half, creating a back-and-forth affair following a slow start. Thursday's matchup against the Bobcats featured two ties and seven lead changes and the D&E bench contributed 37 points.
  • D&E shot 55.6% from the floor in the third quarter against Frostburg State, outscoring the Bobcats 25-17 during that span.
  • Marissa Berlin just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Making her collegiate debut as a freshman, Berlin provided a spark after logging nearly 12 minutes and finishing with a +11 margin when on the floor.
  • Amiah Banks also reached double figures in her Davis & Elkins debut, recording 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the floor. An active force on both sides of the floor, Banks added five rebounds and a game-high five steals in 18 minutes.
  • Allie Taylor and Reagan Sharp had seven points apiece off the bench, while Brooklyn Maxwell and Lena Lee posted six points each in a relatively balanced effort.

SCOUTING GLENVILLE STATE
  • Glenville State is looking to bounce back from its first home loss in conference play during the regular season since 2016. The Pioneers were outscored 25-14 in the third quarter in a 91-86 defeat to Charleston (W.Va.) on January 10.
  • The fast-paced Pioneers have three players that average right around 20 points/game. Taychaun Hubbard (21.0 PPG, 8.0 RPG) leads the way statistically, while Zakiyah Winfield (20.0 PPG, 10.5 RPG) and Re'Shawna Stone (19.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG) are also key contributors on both ends of the floor.
  • Head coach Kim Stephens is in her fifth season at the helm of the Glenville State women's basketball program. No stranger to the program, she played basketball at Glenville State and became a team captain in 2010-11 before earning WVIAC Student-Athlete of the Year accolades that season. Stephens went on to join the coaching staff as an assistant before becoming the head coach of the program.
  • The Pioneers racked up 73 of their 126 points from the bench in a season-opening road win at West Virginia State on January 7. Seven players reached double figures in the opener.
  • Winfield posted 22 points and eight rebounds in 29 minutes against Charleston last Sunday. She went 8-of-15 (53.5%) from the floor and 6-of-8 (75%) from the foul line along with a pair of assists.
  • Though early in the season, GSC leads the MEC in scoring offense (106.0), scoring margin (+19.5), rebounding margin (+11.5) and assists/game (20.5).
