PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Takes on Charleston (W. Va.) Wednesday

THE OPENING TIP 
Davis & Elkins women's basketball hopes to get back on track this Wednesday, hitting the road for a conference clash against Charleston (W. Va.), winners of six straight. Jamiyah Johnson secured the D&E school record for rebounds in a single season and moved into ninth place on the all-time rebounding list in school history. D&E struggled to take care of the basketball in a 76-67 road defeat last time out, while Charleston nabbed a 72-59 win at West Liberty on February 9.

  • How It Happened: Davis & Elkins took a three-point advantage into the final frame, but could not overcome a 27-12 outburst by Charleston (W. Va.) over the final 10 minutes in a hard-fought 65-53 defeat to the Golden Eagles inside the McDonnell Center last month.
   
JOHNSON CLIMBING UP D&E RECORD BOOKS WITH STELLAR CAMPAIGN
  • Jamiyah Johnson has had a stellar season as a junior for the Senators, and her production has her name throughout the program's record book. Securing 10 or more rebounds in 14 straight contests, Johnson has set a new single season rebounding record with 333, passing Erin Smulski (1995-96) for most all-time.
  • Johnson has grabbed 665 rebounds in her career, moving to ninth all-time, just five behind Vickie Warehime (1983-86) and Gail Rasor (1998-2002) for seventh.
  • The junior forward leads the team in scoring average (18.9) and rebounding (15.1). She is second nationally in rebounding average, just behind Wheeling's Lily Ritz, and leads all of NCAA DII basketball in offensive rebounds/game (6.2). She is seventh in the league in scoring.
  • Johnson is tied for the nation lead with 19 double-doubles this season, securing at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in 14 consecutive contests.
 
DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES
  • Davis & Elkins enters Wednesday in 10th place in the league standings, currently holding the last spot in the MEC Tournament picture.
  • Sydney Nestor has posted double figures in five consecutive games, ranking second in the team in scoring average (10.4).
  • Peyton Mohler had 12 points off the bench last time out for D&E, adding five rebounds and three assists. Mohler (9.1) and Jessica Eadsforth-Yates (9.0) round out the Senators top four scores.
  • Mohler is fifth in the MEC with 82 made free throws, converting at a 76.6% clip from the stripe this season.  
  • The Senators are 2-8 on the road last season, with their last win away from home on January 29 against West Liberty.
  • Senior Jay Kilpatrick leads the team with 44 assists, but four other players have 35 assists or more this season for D&E.
  • The Senators are 10th in the league in three-point field goal percentage, converting 27.8% of their shots from beyond the arc.
  • D&E has owned the glass this season, posting a positive rebounding margin in 16 games, but have committed more turnovers than its opponents in 20 of 23 games.
  
SCOUTING CHARLESTON
  • Charleston has won six consecutive games, positioned third in the MEC standings. The Golden Eagles have the second longest winning streak in the conference, just behind Glenville State (12).
  • Anna Hayton (19.6 PPG) paces a quartet of double figure scorers for Charleston, also leading the squad with 8.8 rebounds/game.
  • The Golden Eagles rank eighth nationally in three-point field goal percentage, knocking down 38.7% of their long-range shots as a team. Dakota Reeves powers that effort for Charleston, ranking sixth nationally in made three-pointers (76) and fifth in three-point percentage (47.2).
  • Also a stout team defensively, Charleston is third in the MEC in steals (237) and fourth in blocks (73). Brooklyn Pannnell paces the Golden Eagles with a league-best 55 steals, while Hayton is third in the MEC with 32 blocked shots this season.
