PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Makes Trip to Concord on Saturday

THE OPENING TIP  
Davis & Elkins hits the road for a conference matchup with Concord on January 18 at 2:00 PM. The Senators are facing their third straight opponent with double-digit wins and are looking to halt their four-game slide. Concord used a big third quarter to escape with a 65-64 road win against West Virginia Wesleyan last time out.

  • How It Happened: Despite shooting just 29% from the floor for the game, Davis & Elkins endured a 66-60 setback against Concord in December of 2018. Sydney Nestor posted six points and six rebounds in the game, while Madison May had 16 points for the Mountain Lions.
  
DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES
  • Davis & Elkins announced a change in location for Monday's nonconference contest with Alderson Broaddus. The game, set to tip at 5:30 PM, will be played inside the McDonnell center in Elkins.
  • Jamiyah Johnson continues to rack up the numbers, leading the nation in offensive rebounds per game (6.3) while ranking second nationally in rebounding average (14.2). Her offensive rebounding total leads all of DII men's and women's basketball.
  • Johnson has secured a double-double in nine consecutive games (sixth in NCAA DII), scoring at least 30 points four times over that span. She is just 13 boards shy of tying her rebounding total from 2018-19 (212).
  • Davis & Elkins was outrebounded by an opponent for just the fourth time this season against Glenville State. The Senators had recorded a double-digit rebounding margin against each of its previous four opponents (Urbana, Salem, WV State, Charleston).
  • While rebounding has been a strong suit for the Senators this season, turnovers have been costly all year long. D&E is last in the nation in turnover margin (-7.36) following 26 giveaways against Glenville State.
  • Jay Kilpatrick passed out a season-best five assists against a pressure packed Glenville State defense last time out despite battling through foul trouble. She also notched her eighth double figure scoring game this season with 10 points against the Pioneers.
  • Sydney Nestor has scored 10 or more points in three straight outings, logging at least 30 minutes in all those games. She has also grabbed five or more rebounds in six consecutive contests.
  • Rachel Bolyard has converted multiple three-point field goals in each of the last two games.
  • Davis & Elkins last three opponents have a combined record of 29-16 (.644).
 
SCOUTING CONCORD
  • Maggie Guynn had a game-high 21 points to help propel Concord to an exciting 65-64 road win last time out against West Virginia Wesleyan.
  • Riley Fitzwater surpassed the 1,000-point plateau in the victory for Concord over the Bobcats. Fitzwater is also a threat on the other end of the floor with 54 blocked shots, the most in the MEC.
  • The Mountain Lions lead the MEC and rank 10th nationally in blocked shots per game (5.1).
  • Concord has lost two of its last four contests, but enter Saturday's game tied for second in the league standings with a 7-2 conference mark.
  • Madison May is second in the league in scoring average (22.2) and second on the team in rebounding average (8.8).
