ELKINS, W.Va. -- The final game of the regular season between rivals Davis & Elkins and West Virginia Wesleyan was a back-and-forth affair that saw fourteen lead changes and the two teams tied with twenty-three seconds remaining before the Senators pulled out the 71-67 victory at home.
Taylor Smith led the scoring attack for D&E with 22 points on 9-14 from the field. She totaled 4 of 8 from behind the arc, pulled down 6 rebounds, and had 2 steals.
Madison Butler contributed 20 points on 7 of 14 shooting and was 6 of 7 from the free throw line. A layup by Butler, followed by a defensive rebound and two free throws in the final moments of the game sealed the win for the Senators.
Ellie Wilkerson also scored in double-digits with 13. She added 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
Jaela Reid scored 6,
Jackie Wright scored 4, and
LaChazity Shaver and
Victoria Sturm scored 3 apiece.
D&E finishes the regular season 7-19 overall and 7-15 in the Mountain East Conference.
The Senators are the #8 seed in the Mountain East Conference Basketball Tournament. They draw Frostburg State, the #9 seed in the first round and will play Wednesday, March 1 at 2:30pm at Wheeling's Wesbanco Arena.
