PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Visits West Virginia State in Return to MEC Action

THE OPENING TIP  
Davis & Elkins women's basketball aims for their second win in the last three contests in a return to Mountain East Conference (MEC) action against West Virginia State on January 8 at 5:30 PM from the Walker Convocation Center. The Senators fell to Salem in a nonconference road matchup, 92-72, last time out on January 2 while the Yellow Jackets dropped a nonconference clash to Elizabeth City State, 103-98, on January 4.

DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES
  • Davis & Elkins attempted to whittle away an early deficit, but Salem continued to answer each time with a scoring run in a 92-72 loss on January 2. Three players posted double digits for the Senators, which included a career-high 13 points for Rachel Bolyard.
  • Jamiyah Johnson secured her eighth double-double of the season last time out against Salem, setting a new career high for a season. She is one of three players tied for fifth in the nation in double-doubles with only four other players recording more this season.
  • D&E held a 62-40 edge on the glass against Salem and the Senators have outrebounded their opponents in eight of 11 games this season, including each of the last six contests. Davis & Elkins enters the matchup leading the MEC with a +7.6 rebounding margin.
  • Johnson leads the MEC and ranks third nationally in rebounds/game (13.7). She is second in the nation in offensive rebounds/game (5.7).
  • Johnson is tied for fourth in school history in rebounding average (minimum of 30 games), pulling down 7.3 rebounds/game over her tenure.
  • Jay Kilpatrick has posted 11 points in each of the last two games, pushing her double digit scoring total to six games in 2019-20. She also leads the team in assists (24) this season.
  • Allie Taylor chipped in seven points in seven minutes against the Tigers, while Abbie Bartenslager pulled down a career-best seven boards on January 2.

SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA STATE
  • West Virginia State's roster features just one upperclassman in junior Kai-Lee Valentine. The Yellow Jackets have eight freshmen (two redshirt freshmen) on the team for the 2019-20 season.
  • Charity Shears broke her own school record with nine three-pointers in a 103-98 home loss to Elizabeth City State. Shears registered a career-high 34 points and added three rebounds and two steals in 30 minutes.
  • For the second straight game, Davis & Elkins will face a team that likes to shoot from beyond the arc. WVSU has attempted 363 three-pointers this season, while Salem leads the nation with 432 three-point field goal attempts.
  • West Virginia State is second in the MEC in scoring offense (89.3) and boast a lineup with four players averaging double figures.
  • The Yellow Jackets are 3-6 at home this season with their last win coming on December 20 against Salem.
  • After spending three years as the head coach at Glenville State, Charles Marshall is in his fourth season at the helm of the WVSU women's basketball program.
  • Chloe Cheresne is second on the team in scoring average (13.3) and rebounding average (6.5).
