PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Welcomes Wheeling for Impromptu Home Matchup

THE OPENING TIP 
Returning for its first action since the Thanksgiving break, Davis & Elkins is back in conference play on Wednesday, welcoming Wheeling to Elkins for a Wednesday night matchup. The Senators fell to Frostburg State, 71-63, last time out and the Cardinals are looking to avenge a 72-66 home loss to Urbana. Wednesday marks the first of a three-game homestead for the Senators, which concludes on December 12.

AROUND THE LEAGUE  
DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES 
  • The Senators outscored Frostburg State by a 20-14 margin in the second quarter, but could not contain the Bobcats from beyond the arc in the third frame during a 71-63 loss on November 26. 
  • Davis & Elkins is 2-1 against Wheeling, dating back to the 2011-12 season. Rachel Gostomski fired in 21 points in a 63-49 WVIAC victory at the McDonnell Center on December 17, 2011 before Paige Turner posted 20 points in a 64-50 road triumph for the Senators on January 21, 2012.
  • Jamiyah Johnson was a force on the glass once again for Davis & Elkins, pulling in 17 rebounds (five offensive) to go along with 11 points for her third double-double of the year. Johnson is second in the MEC in rebounding (11.0 reb/game) and third with 25 offensive rebounds. 
  • Courtney Roth was a +11 for the Senators, logging nearly 21 minutes last time out against Frostburg. She notched nine points, all coming from beyond the arc. 
  • Jay Kilpatrick has gone through a brief scoring slump after opening the season with double figures in each of the first three games. She rebounded a bit against Frostburg State, converting for seven points and two assists. 
  • Jessica Eadsforth-Yates has bumped her scoring average to 9.7 points/game following a 13-point outing against Frostburg State. She has connected on multiple three pointers in three of six games to start the year.
  • D&E and Wheeling are among the bottom of the league in scoring offense with each team averaging under 70.0 points/game. 
 
SCOUTING WHEELING 
  • The MEC moved Wednesday's game to Elkins with Wheeling hosting the 2019 NCAA Atlantic Region Volleyball Tournament this week.
  • Sophomore F Lilly Ritz posted a double-double with 17 points and 21 rebounds (10 offensive) while playing all 40 minutes in a 72-66 road loss to Urbana. Ritz is the Cardinals top scorer, averaging 14.3 points/game.
  • Wheeling (27.4%) and D&E (26.1%) are the bottom two teams, ranking 11th and 12th, in three-point field goal percentage in the Mountain East Conference.
  • Khira Burton is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points/game. The senior guard has logged 38 minutes or more in four of five games this season for the Cardinals.
  • Mike Llanas is in his second season with the Cardinals after a 14-year stint that included over 350 wins at Owens Community College in Ohio.
