BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – Davis & Elkins junior forward
Jamiyah Johnson was named the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Johnson turned in another stellar week to help the Senators to 1-1 overall, including a 75-70 road win at Urbana on December 14. She averaged 27.0 points and 21.5 rebounds per game, all while shooting nearly 73% from the floor.
The Williamsburg, Va. native opened the week with her fourth consecutive double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 17 rebounds along with three assists against Notre Dame (Ohio) on December 12 at the McDonnell Center.
Johnson, who becomes the first Senator women's basketball player to win an award from the MEC, followed it up with the one of the best individual outings for a D&E player against Urbana on December 14. Johnson tied her career high in scoring with 31 points and tied a school record with 26 rebounds in the conference victory against the Blue Knights.
Securing her fifth consecutive double-double before halftime, Johnson went 13-of-18 from the field against Urbana and pulled down 14 offensive rebounds in 36 minutes. Johnson's 26 rebounds tied a school record set by Vickie Warehime against CW Post back in January of 1985 and were the most by a DII player in a game this season.
She recently surpassed the 500-point plateau for her career this week and enters the new year with 472 career rebounds. Johnson is currently tied for fourth in school history in rebounding average, pulling in 7.3 boards per game over the course of her career (minimum 30 games).
Johnson currently leads the MEC in rebounding (140), rebounding average (14.0 reb/game) and offensive rebounding (5.7 off reb/game). She committed just three personal fouls over the span of 74 minutes on the court the last two contests.
Davis & Elkins returns to the court in 2020, facing Salem (W. Va.) for nonconference road action on Thursday, January 2 beginning at 6:00 PM.
