Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. — No. 5 Davis & Elkins saw its season come to a close Sunday night with a 14-11 loss to No. 4 Wheeling in the Mountain East Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament play-in game at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The Senators finish the season at 11-8 overall, while Wheeling improves to 10-8 and moves on in the MEC Tournament bracket.
The appearance marked Davis & Elkins' fifth consecutive trip to the MEC Championship Tournament under head coach David Pomeroy and assistant coach Harley Kinney.
Wheeling used a strong opening half to build control early, taking a 4-3 lead after the first quarter before outscoring Davis & Elkins 3-1 in the second to carry a 7-4 advantage into halftime.
Davis & Elkins battled back throughout the contest, including a four-goal third quarter, but a decisive stretch by Wheeling midway through the third proved to be the difference. The Cardinals scored five goals in a span of just over six minutes during the period, extending their lead to 12-6.
Trailing 13-8 entering the fourth, the Senators mounted one final push. Ke'ya Stevens, Josephine Whorton and Izzie Sevila each found the back of the net during a late 3-0 run to cut the deficit to 14-11, but Davis & Elkins could not get any closer in the closing minutes.
Talia Berardo led the Senators offensively with three goals and one assist, while Whorton added two goals and an assist. Stevens also contributed three points with a goal and two assists, and Sevila, Savannah Quave, Morgan Rogers, Alexia Gonzales and Rylee Anderson each tallied a goal.
Emelia Johnson dished out two assists, and Zoe Mackey paced the defensive effort with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Wheeling was led by Sophia Cirone's five goals and one assist, while Trinity Rose added four goals and two assists.
The Cardinals held advantages in shots (42-35) and draw controls (16-11), helping offset 19 turnovers. Davis & Elkins finished 17-of-27 on clear attempts and recorded 13 ground balls in the contest.
Megan Bauer made 16 saves in goal for the Senators.
The loss marks the end of the 2026 season for Davis & Elkins following its fifth straight MEC Tournament appearance.
