David Pomeroy: Coaching with Purpose, Leading with Heart
David Pomeroy continues to build upon his legacy as a transformative figure in women’s lacrosse, now entering his 20th year as a collegiate coach and his 5th season leading the Davis & Elkins College Senators. Since his arrival in the fall of 2021, Pomeroy has guided the program to historic heights, becoming the all-time winningest coach in team history and instilling a culture of excellence on and off the field.
With two decades of coaching experience, Pomeroy has developed a reputation for cultivating competitive, disciplined teams while also prioritizing the academic and personal development of his student-athletes. During his tenure at D&E, the Senators have made four straight appearances in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament, earned 16 All-Conference selections, and produced five MEC All-Freshman honorees in just four seasons.
The 2023-24 campaign marked a watershed moment for the program, setting a new benchmark with a record-breaking 12-win season. The team’s success was highlighted by six All-MEC awards, including standout performances from Ariana Hinton, Zoe Mackey, Kimmy Winoker, Izzie Sevila, Marrisa Cuevas, and Jessie Dwyer. Zoe Mackey’s selection as MEC Freshman of the Year underscored the program’s ongoing commitment to developing young talent, with Mackey, Dwyer, and Ke’ya Stevens also earning spots on the MEC All-Freshman Team.
Pomeroy’s impact extends far beyond competition. His student-athletes consistently achieve academic honors, with numerous players named to the D&E President’s and Dean’s Lists, reflecting a balanced emphasis on scholarship and sport. His earlier seasons saw equally impressive accomplishments, including Marissa Cuevas ranking among national leaders in saves and earning MEC Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second time in 2022.
Pomeroy’s journey to coaching success is rooted in resilience. After a life-threatening throat injury in high school ended his NCAA playing aspirations, he continued pursuing his love of the sport, competing in the MCLA for the University of Wyoming (2006–2008). He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rowan University and a master’s in Sport Management from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Now entering his fifth season at Davis & Elkins and his 20th year on the sidelines, Pomeroy remains a driving force behind the program’s growth. Residing in Elkins, he continues to inspire through his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to his team, leaving a lasting mark on D&E women’s lacrosse and the broader lacrosse community.
