Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Davis & Elkins baseball team used two big offensive innings to power past St. Cloud State, 11-5, Wednesday afternoon at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
The Senators (2-8) jumped on the scoreboard early and never trailed after scoring four runs in the first inning and adding five more in the third.
St. Cloud State opened the scoring in the top of the first after a passed ball allowed a run to cross the plate for a 1-0 lead. Davis & Elkins quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning. Carsan Strolla delivered a two-run double to center field to score Zach Calef-Boring and Kenny Capria, giving the Senators a 2-1 advantage. Mason Brenneman followed with an RBI groundout before Aiden Morey added an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1.
D&E broke the game open in the third inning, plating five runs to push the lead to 9-1. Morey drew a bases-loaded walk to start the scoring, and Nick Colarossi followed with a two-run single to left. Later in the inning, Kenny Capria reached on an error that allowed another run to score, and Calef-Boring added an RBI fielder's choice.
The Senators added insurance in the fifth when Capria singled to center to bring home Dylan Leadbetter, and another run scored in the seventh after Calef-Boring reached on a single that resulted in an error, allowing Capria to score.
St. Cloud State chipped away late with two runs in the eighth and a solo home run from N. Ibrahim in the ninth, but the Senators held on for the 11-5 victory.
Collin Schneider earned the win in relief, tossing 5.1 innings while allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Kenny Capria started on the mound for Davis & Elkins, working 3.2 innings with five strikeouts.
At the plate, the Senators totaled 11 hits. Strolla finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Colarossi added two hits and two RBIs. Calef-Boring also recorded two hits and drove in a run, and Capria scored twice while adding two RBIs.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Thursday against Concordia-St. Paul at 9 a.m. at the Chain of Lakes Complex (Field 4) in Winter Haven, Florida.
