ELKINS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins College women's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with an exhilarating 14-13 overtime victory over Point Park University Sunday afternoon at Nuttall Field. The Senators honored seniors Izzie Sevila, Megan Bauer, Emelia Johnson, Taylor Mudd, Sierra Walesheck, and Morgan Rogers before the contest.
With the win, Davis & Elkins improves to 7-3 on the season.
Davis & Elkins jumped out to an early lead, with Talia Berardo scoring twice in the opening minutes and Rylee Anderson adding another to give the Senators a 3-1 advantage. Point Park answered with goals from Andrea Kinger and Kiley Leasure, keeping the game close as the first quarter ended with Davis & Elkins up 5-3.
The second and third quarters saw a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to gain separation. Berardo continued to find the net, while Ke'ya Stevens contributed three goals. The Senators held a narrow 9-8 lead at halftime, but the Pioneers stayed relentless, keeping the game tied through the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Alexia Gonzales knotted the game at 12-12 early in the frame off a free-position shot, before Berardo gave Davis & Elkins a 13-12 lead. Point Park responded with a goal at 2:46 to force overtime, sending the game into a tense extra period.
In overtime, Berardo delivered the game-winning goal at 4:19, assisted by Sevila, capping a dramatic and hard-fought contest.
Berardo finished with five goals and two assists, Stevens added three goals, Anderson contributed three goals and one assist, Josephine Whorton scored a goal, and Savannah Quave recorded a goal and an assist while adding four ground balls and causing two turnovers. Gonzales picked up four ground balls and two draw controls, while Zoe Mackey contributed six ground balls and five draw controls. In goal, Bauer made 14 saves and caused three turnovers to help preserve the win.
Point Park's Kinger led with five goals, while Leasure added three and Gracie Favela contributed two.
Davis & Elkins returns to Mountain East Conference action Wednesday, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m. at Nuttall Field.
