EDINBORO, Pa. — The Davis & Elkins College men's tennis team recorded a historic 4-3 victory over Edinboro University on Sunday afternoon, marking one of the most significant wins in program history.
The win was the first for the Senators over a regional champion and a team that competed at the NCAA Division II National Championships the previous season. It also marked Davis & Elkins' first victory over Edinboro in 15 years and served as the first collegiate head coaching win for alumni head coach Viktor Yanev.
Philipp Fedorczuk led the way with a statement victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Edinboro's nationally ranked No. 25 player in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. His performance provided a key point in the tightly contested match.
Justus Petersilie earned a critical three-set win at No. 2 singles, rallying for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory. Tom Strohschein secured a key point at No. 4 singles with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) win.
Santiago Ordonez clinched the match for the Senators at No. 6 singles after his opponent retired during the third set, sealing the 4-3 victory.
Edinboro claimed points at Nos. 3 and 5 singles.
The victory represents a major milestone for the Senator program and continues the team's early-season momentum.
The Senators' scheduled match against the University of Pikeville on Feb. 20 was canceled. Davis & Elkins will next compete on March 2 at the University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive, N.C., with first serve set for noon.
