ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College freshman Lilly Wentzler has been named the Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year, the league announced Friday, May 2.
Wentzler made an immediate impact in her debut season with the Senators, competing in both singles and doubles play throughout the spring. She collected five singles victories during the regular season, including four against MEC opponents.
In singles action, Wentzler notched straight-set victories over West Liberty's Mia Camilletti (6-0, 6-1), Franciscan's Hazel Mistry (6-0, 6-1), and avenged an earlier-season loss to Camilletti with a second win (6-1, 6-1) on April 18. She also defeated Joana Reis Indio of West Virginia State (5-1, ret.) and pulled out a dramatic three-set win against Frostburg State's Femke Hofkamp (6-2, 2-6, 7-6(4)).
Wentzler's doubles resume included five victories while competing primarily at the No. 3 spot, with key conference wins alongside Fabienne Lahn against duos from West Liberty and West Virginia State.
A native of Bavaria, Germany, Wentzler is the first Senator to earn MEC Freshman of the Year honors in women's tennis and adds her name to a growing list of postseason accolades for Davis & Elkins tennis this season.
