CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Davis & Elkins women's tennis team came up just short in its bid to upset host California (Pa.) on Tuesday, falling 4-3 in a match that came down to the final court.
The Senators secured the doubles point with wins from Liebe Oosthuizen and Karen Saucedo at No. 2, and Eloise Hutton and Lilly Wentzler at No. 3, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Saucedo and Wentzler followed up their doubles victories with convincing singles wins at No. 4 and No. 6, putting D&E on the brink of victory. However, Cal U swept the final three singles matches to clinch the team win.
"We had a chance to win today against a team that's been playing very well, and that is a positive sign," head coach Mark Walters said. "Overall, I was pleased with the way we played right out of the gate after all the adversity we've been through. Karen, Lilly, and Erin (Laubscher) all competed really well to give us a chance to steal a win here."
The match marked the Senators' first competition in nearly a month after a flu outbreak sidelined all but one player for multiple weeks. The team resumed practice last Monday and had not played a match since Feb. 23.
