Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College dropped both games of a doubleheader against West Virginia State on Sunday at Harpertown Field during Alumni Reunion Weekend.
Prior to first pitch, the Senators honored the 1980 WVIAC Championship team and the 2005 squad that set the program's single-season wins record.
In the opener, D&E fell 2-1 in a tight contest. The Yellow Jackets plated single runs in the third and fifth innings, while the Senators responded with a run in the fifth but stranded the tying run on base in the seventh.
Cooper Blackburn turned in a strong start for D&E, tossing a complete game with six strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs on seven hits over seven innings. Zach Calef-Boring and Grant Mealey each collected a hit for the Senators, who left nine runners stranded.
In Game 2, Davis & Elkins was blanked 5-0. The Senators were limited to three hits against the West Virginia State starting pitcher, who fired a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts.
Joseph De La Nuez, Isaac Lane, and Jett Walters each recorded a hit for D&E. Freshman Diego Reyes battled through five innings on the mound, surrendering just two earned runs while striking out two, but the Senators were undone by three defensive errors.
Davis & Elkins (6-35, 5-19 MEC) continues its series against West Virginia State (23-19, 13-11 MEC) with another doubleheader on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Harpertown Field.
