Blackburn Shines in Game One as Senators Split Doubleheader with Charleston

ELKINS, W.Va. – Cooper Blackburn fired a complete-game gem to lift Davis & Elkins to a 3-1 victory in the opener, but the Senators' sixth-inning rally in game two came up short in a 6-4 loss to Charleston (W.Va.) during a Mountain East Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday at Harpertown Field.

In Game One, Blackburn was in command from the start, scattering five hits and one earned run across seven innings. He struck out three and walked just one to earn his second win of the season, retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced.

Offensively, senior outfielder Larry Kusan went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored to lead the Senators (5-27, 4-12 MEC). Grant Mealey added a pair of hits and drove in two runs, while Zach Calef-Boring reached base three times with two hits and a hit-by-pitch.

D&E scratched across single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings, including Kusan's RBI double in the fifth that pushed the lead to 2-1. Mealey tacked on an insurance run with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

In Game Two, the Senators found themselves in an early 5-0 hole before erupting for four runs in the sixth inning. Mealey, Noah Hanna, and Cort Kegley each drove in a run during the rally, with D&E capitalizing on a combination of walks and timely hitting. Kusan again paced the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, finishing the day 6-for-8 at the plate.

Joseph De La Nuez added a hit and a run scored, while Calef-Boring reached base and stole a base in the loss. Lane (0-8) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on 13 hits over 3.1 innings. Relievers Kyle Ball and Carson Gorby held Charleston scoreless the rest of the way, with Gorby tossing two shutout frames and striking out two.
