ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Charleston (W.Va.) on Monday afternoon at Harpertown Field, winning the opener 4-3 before falling 7-2 in the nightcap.
In Game 1, the Senators used a late-inning rally and a combined pitching effort to edge Charleston. Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Larry Kusan delivered the walkoff RBI single, capping a 2-for-4 day that also included a stolen base. Mason Brenneman and Zach Calef-Boring each added doubles, while Joseph De La Nuez scored a key run to help power the offense.
On the mound, Diego Reyes worked the first 5.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out four and throwing 96 pitches. Ethan Marshall earned the win in relief, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with one hit and one walk to improve to 2-5 on the year.
Game 2 saw the Senators again hold a lead into the late innings before a five-run seventh propelled Charleston to a 7-2 win. D&E took a 2-1 lead in the fourth after a Brenneman double and an RBI double from Calef-Boring. Kusan, Brenneman, and Calef-Boring accounted for three of the team's four hits in the game.
Marshall returned to start Game 2, working 5.0 solid innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits with one walk. Dylan Miller took the loss in relief, giving up two runs in the sixth. Malakai Webb and Brycen Sechler combined to finish the game, with Sechler tossing 0.2 scoreless innings.
With the doubleheader split, Davis & Elkins improves to 6-28 overall and 5-13 in MEC play.
