Swimming Teams Sweep Battle Of The Hills Meet

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College swim teams triumphed in the two-day Battle of the Hills meet against West Virginia Wesleyan College, securing victories for both the men's and women's teams on consecutive days.

The first day, held at Myles Pool on Friday night, began with a Senior Night celebration honoring the D&E seniors. The Senators carried that energy into competition, dominating several events.

Day 1 Highlights:

  • Daphne McCann finished first in the 100-yd Backstroke with a time of 1:05.17, with teammate Lauren Lockwood placing second (1:06.41). The pair also took first and second place, respectively, in the 50-yd Backstroke. McCann finished in a time of 30.75 with Lockwood hot on her tail in a time of 30.77.  
  • Becca Rodrigues (Women's 100-yard Breaststroke) claimed first in 1:15.27, while Maria Lugo secured second (1:17.90). The two swimmers also went first and second in the 50-yard race (34.22, 35.01). Rodrigues also touched the wall first in the 50-yard Freestyle in a time of 27.45 with Jolie McGaughan right behind her in second place with a time of 28.46. 
  • Julianne Hobson led the Women's 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:05.08, and won the 50-yard Butterfly in a time of 28.54. Emily Durst took second place in the 50-yard Butterfly in a time of 30.51, while Maximillia Sutherland took second in the 100-yard Butterfly (1:13.82).
  • The men's team saw standout performances from Payton Williamson (Men's 100-yard Backstroke, 55.61) and Lasse Schrieken (Men's 100-yard Breaststroke, 1:02.30). Schrieken also took home the win in the 50-yard Breaststroke (29.25) while Willamson won the 200-yard Freestyle (1:55.65).

The women's 400-yard Freestyle Relay team of Hobson, Lockwood, McCann, and Savannah Foley clinched victory with a time of 3:58.55, while the men's relay team of Schrieken, Elie Content, Spencer Willey, and Williamson won their event in 3:29.67.

After the first day of the meet, the overall scores had the D&E women outscoring WVWC 152-53, while the men posted a dominant 106-59 victory.

Day 2 Recap: The teams traveled to Buckhannon for Saturday's competition, continuing their success:

  • Rodrigues topped the Women's 100-yard IM with a time of 1:08.52, with Julia Viera-Vasconcelos taking second (1:13.64).
  • Daphne McCann continued to perform, winning the 200-yard Backstroke in a time of 2:27.16 and taking second place in the 50-yard Free in 26.63.
  • Lauren Lockwood took first in the 100-yard Butterfly (2:25.03).
  • Hobson secured another victory in the Women's 200-yard Freestyle (2:13.11), with Emily Durst taking second (2:17.07). Hobson also took second place in the 100-yard Free (57.35).
  • On the men's side, Williamson dominated the Men's 200-yard Backstroke (2:00.93) and 200-yard Butterfly (2:03.88), and Schrieken won the Men's 100-yard Freestyle (50.46), and the 200-yard Breaststroke (2:18.95).
  • Elie Content won the 50-yard Freestyle (23.56) and took second place in the 100-yard Freestyle (51.04).
  • Ricardo Salas claimed victory in the 100-yard IM event (1:03.77).

The Senators swept the relay events again, showcasing depth and teamwork. The women's 200-yard Freestyle Relay team of Hobson, Foley, Lockwood, and Rodrigues finished first with a time of 1:50.51. The men's team of Content, Willey, Ricardo Salas, and Xavier Brown also claimed first in their relay with 1:41.52. The women's 400-yard Medley Relay team of McCann, Lugo, Lockwood and Durst took first place in a time of 4:29.26.

The overall scores confirmed the Senators' dominance. The D&E women outscored WVWC 122-51, while the men posted a commanding 95-37 victory.
