Salem, W.Va. - Eloise Hutton won the clinching singles point in a super-tiebreak to give Davis & Elkins a 4-3 win in women's tennis action.
Hutton, a junior from France, pulled out the match by winning the final eight points to claim the match tie break by a 10-3 score. Hutton had won the first set 7-5 before dropping set two 4-6.
The Senators had been 0 for 3 in match tie breaks up to that point during the day, as Salem took points at #1 doubles, #2 singles, and #1 singles to take a 3-2.
Karen Saucedo got the Senators on the board with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the #5 line.
D&E evened up the match at 3-3 when freshman
Liebe Oosthuizen pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 win at #3 singles to keep the Senators alive and se the table for Hutton's heroics.
"It was a bit of a crazy match today, and I was very happy to see Eloise and Liebe get those big wins," said head coach
Mark Walters. "We had a makeshift lineup with a player out, very hot weather which was a factor, and some home crowd noise to maneuver. But the girls handled it very well all day to keep us in the match So Eloise could get us home."
Hutton had to stage comebacks in both the first set, where she saved 2 set points, and then in the tiebreaker where she fell behind briefly at 2-3 before rattling off 8 consecutive points. Using a consistent forehand to control the tempo and keep her opponent pinned to the baseline, Hutton won several points with clean winners or forcing an error.
"Both Eloise and Liebe have battled at times with their emotions and learning to play smart tennis under pressure, and both of them really made strides today with their mental toughness and physical effort," said Walters. "Everyone played well today, we just needed something special at the end and Eloise and Liebe got the job done."
