Buckhannon, W. Va. – The Davis & Elkins men's and women's tennis teams played host to Edinboro University on Sunday, each falling to the Fighting Scots 4-0. With the loss, the men's record moves to 2-4 while the women start the spring off 0-2.
"After a tight doubles where we had a chance to take a lead, Edinboro showed their mettle by shutting us down in the singles," said head coach Mark Walters.
The highlights for the Senators on the weekend included strong showings from the doubles team of
Vinicius Azeredo and
Julian Tamburini who came away with a 6-4 win, and a gritty match from Freshman duo
Duarte Correia and
Sean Maphosa, who ultimately fell 7-5.
"
Duarte Correia had another solid outing in doubles and singles, battling ranked players right to limit. His grit is helping him fight off slow starts and get into the matches, and he's learning to adjust mid-match," Walters said.
On the women's side, the doubles team of Freshman
Karen Saucedo and Junior
Eloise Hutton came away with a dominant 6-1 win. In singles, Freshman
Liebe Oosthuizen battled back after falling down a set, but ultimately couldn't complete the comeback in the third set.
Coach Walters said, "We battled really well in the majority of the matches today, but had some freshmen moments and first match jitters that come with the territory for young teams. EU played the big points cleaner, and they pulled away in the second sets which is something our girls will learn to prevent with some more matches."
