Women's Tennis Takes Down Cal 6-1

Buckhannon, W.Va. – David and Elkins swept the first five singles positions to lead the way for 6-1 win over California University (PA) Sunday afternoon in women's college tennis action. After taking the doubles point, the Senator women grabbed the first set in four of the six singles positions to keep their momentum on the way to the win.

Andreia Semeano and Erin Laubscher won both of their matches against the Lady Vulcans, teaming up for a 6-4 at #1 doubles before earning singles wins. Laubscher got the Senators their first singles point with a straight set win at #2, and Semeano closed the scoring with a 7-6 (8), 3-6, 10-7 decision at #1. In between, D&E got singles points from Eloise Hutton, Karen Saucedo, and Liebe Oosthuizen on the way to it's second win of the spring.

Oosthuizen's 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Cal's Lili Schreiber in the #3 singles position was her first win of the year in a three-set match, breaking a hard luck streak of three consecutive defeats.

"I thought the doubles was going to be a key for us today, and as it turned out it definitely helped us get some steam going into the singles," said coach Mark Walters. "We have been all around  a win the past four trips out for these women, and I really think they are starting to feel comfortable with their games."

Walters was particularly pleased for his freshman Oosthuizen, who trailed 0-3 in the third set before clawing back to take a lead at 5-4. She then closed it out by breaking her opponent to finish the match, which has been her Achilles heel through the first matches of the year.

"If we start getting some consistent contributions from Liebe, she can really pick up the level of the whole team," said Walters. "She is playing up a bit higher than I would like for freshman, but she gives us a competitive match every time out so far even though the final results haven't been in her favor through today. Now that she's broken through, I'll be looking forward to seeing how she manages herself in the big points from here out."
