MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Davis & Elkins Men's and Women's Swim Teams took on the other institutions from around the state in the season kick-off West Virginia State Games and the men finished runner-up, while the women finished third.
Following the first session of the two-day event, both teams found themselves in third place. The D&E women trailed only West Virginia and Marshall, while the men trailed West Virginia and Fairmont State.
The first session was highlighted by strong individual performance by
Edwin Li,
Shelbey Fuller, and
Jakob Knoblauch.
Li and Fuller were the top Division II swimmers in the two 100 breaststroke events. Li was in the mix with the top swimmers from West Virginia, finishing fourth overall with a career-best time of 57.18. Fuller finished tenth with a time of 1:09.99 and as the top Division II swimmer in the field of tough competitors from West Virginia and Marshall.
Enrique Garcia also put in a solid performance in the event, finishing seventh in a time of 59.90.
In the 1000 freestyle, a trio of Senator men had top ten finishes.
Jakob Knoblauch led the way, finished sixth with a time of 10:40.23 and as the top Division II swimmer in the event.
Geoff Dixon was eighth (11:16.81), and
Ricardo Salas was tenth (12:07.97).
Payton Williamson added a top ten performance in the 200 butterfly, swimming to a ninth-place finish at 2:06.28.
The Senators competed in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays on the first day of competition.
The women's medley relay team of
Daphne McCann,
Becca Rodrigues, Fuller, and
Savannah Foley were the meet's top finishing Division II program by three seconds at 1:56.69. The men's medley team of
Payton Williamson, Li,
Elbert Cooper, and
Spencer Willey finished sixth at 1:39.18 and
Geoff Dixon, Garcia, Knoblauch, and
Nicholas Allen finished seventh at 1:40.73.
The women's 400 freestyle relay team of McCann, Fuller,
Bryanna Gollmer, and Rodrigues were once again the top Division II finishing program at 3:55.34. The men's relay of Knoblauch, Williamson, Garcia, and Dixon finished seventh in 3:21.15.
On day two, the D&E women held the third-place spot, while the men jumped past Fairmont State to the second overall position.
Fuller once again was the highest finishing Division II swimmer in an individual event. This time Fuller finished ninth in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:33.59. Li and Garcia again put together solid performances as well. Li finished fourth in the event at 2:09.61, while Garcia was sixth at 2:20.75.
Knoblauch had a solid eighth-place finish in the 500 freestyle at 5:03.82. He was once again the top Division II competitor in the field.
Rodrigues put up a top-Division II swim in a stacked 200 individual medley. Her time of 2:23.70 was good for twenty-third place in the loaded event.
The Senators put together top finishing Division II teams in three of four relays contested in the session.
In the 400 medley relay, McCann, Rodrigues, Fuller, and Gollmer finished eighth at 4:21.20. The men's team of Dixon, Garcia, Knoblauch, and Allen finished fifth in the medley relay with a time of 3:44.25.
In the finale, the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Foley, McCann, Hobson, and Fuller finished seventh with a time of 1:44.50. Vondrasek, Dixon, Li, and Garcia finished on the men's side at 1:30.74.
In the women's competition Marshall won the State Games for the first time. West Virginia was second and Davis & Elkins was third. Fairmont State, Wheeling, Bethany, West Virginia Wesleyan, and WVU-Tech rounded out the field.
West Virginia won the men's meet and D&E finished runner-up. Fairmont State, WVU-Tech, Wheeling, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Bethany rounded out the field.

The Senators compete next at the California Duals on Saturday, October 21 at 1pm. D&E will compete with Frostburg State's men's and women's teams and California's women's team.
