ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Davis & Elkins junior
Kyle Wojtaszek made history for the Senators, becoming the first individual to win a bout at the NCAA National Championships with his upset 8-1 decision in the opening round on Friday.
Additionally,
Craig Cook and
Noah Tarr competed at the national tournament at 149 and 165 pounds respectively.
Wojtaszek knocked off fifth-seeded Anderson Salisbury (Colorado School of Mines) in the first round, continuing to apply the pressure before landing several takedowns to create enough separation to earn the 8-1 decision win.
Cook battled to a stalemate for much of his opening round match with Ashland's Carson Speelman in a narrow 3-2 loss. His consolation bout with Eric Faught (Upper Iowa) also went down to the wire, with final takedown ruling challenged and eventually upheld for the final 3-1 margin.
Tarr competed in the 165-pound bracket, falling to Devin Fitzpatrick (St. Cloud State) in the first round and John Dean (Belmont Abbey) later in the day.
Davis & Elkins was competing at the NCAA National Tournament for the first time in program history after last year's even was halted suddenly.
