PREVIEW: Volleyball Primed for MEC Semifinals; Faces Fairmont State on Friday

SETTING THE SCENE 
Davis & Elkins volleyball looks to keep the momentum going into the Mountain East Conference Tournament Semifinals, facing Fairmont State on Friday, March 12 at 5:00 PM. The tournament semifinals and finals will take place in Institute, hosting by West Virginia State.
 
D&E knocked off West Virginia Wesleyan in straight sets for the second-straight outing, with Tuesday's win pushing the Senators to the next round of the postseason. The Senators capped the spring 2021 season with an unbeaten 7-0 record at home.

  • How It Happened: Davis & Elkins won the second and third sets, but the visiting Fairmont State Falcons got the last laugh with wins in set four and five to claim victory. Kaitlyn LaCour fired 25 kills for the Senators, who celebrated Senior Day inside the McDonnell Center.

DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES
  • The Senators have posted three consecutive victories in straight sets, winning six of the last seven overall.
  • Mya Mintschenko hit .615 and posted nine kills and two block assists to help carry the Senators past West Virginia Wesleyan in the MEC Quarterfinals. Molly Jandris had a match-high 15 kills for D&E in the win.
  • Macie Magallon ranks second in the MEC with 4.49 kills/set and is third with 196.5 points on the season. Magallon, who was named the MEC Offensive Player of the Week on February 8, has notched double digit kills in all 12 matches this season.
  • The Senators are second in the league in service aces, posting 1.77 aces/set. Four players have posted 10 or more aces this season, including a team-best 13 from Brilane Manchego.
  • The Senators advanced to the MEC Semifinals in the 2019, falling to eventual conference champion Wheeling that season.

SCOUTING FAIRMONT STATE
  • Fairmont State advanced to the MEC Semifinals with a 3-1 win against Notre Dame (Ohio) on March 9. The Falcons battled back to take three sets after dropping the opening frame.
  • Julia DiPaola fired 24 kills and added three blocks for the Falcons. DiPaola and Keara Lewis pace the team with 123 kills each.
  • Courtney Materazzi is in her seventh season of leading the Fairmont State volleyball program, amassing over 100 career victories.
  • Kelsey Moller had 21 assists and 13 digs in the win over NDC earlier this week.
  • The Falcons have won six consecutive matches heading into the semifinal round.
