ELKINS, W. Va. - The Davis & Elkins College baseball team is set to open up their season on Friday, heading to Glenville for their opening weekend, taking on Mansfield at 11:00 AM, and following up with Ohio Valley on Saturday, and #9 Mercyhurst on Sunday.
Â
The Senators return a bulk of their roster from 2019, and will look to combine veteran experience with a heavy group of talented underclassmen as they transition to the Mountain East for head coach
Mason Heyne's fifth season at the helm.
Â
On the mound, the Senators return their top three pitchers from 2019 in innings pitched, led by seniors
Brent McMillion and
Max Larimore, and adding in a year of development and experience for sophomore
Marcos Feria. Freshman
Zachary McGillan will also see significant action on the bump for D&E.
Â
At the plate,
Chase DeGrood returns as the team's leading hitter from 2019, and sophomore
Justin Worley will be joined by freshman brother
Jordan Worley to form a duo in the lineup. Junior
Tanner Wickham and transfer
Najay King are also expected to add depth to a squad that saw five freshmen see at least 70 plate appearances in 2019.
Â
Following their opening weekend, D&E will play a three-game series with Bloomsburg to kick off spring break, before heading south to take on Claflin and Savannah State. To lead off MEC play, the Senators will host Fairmont State and Frostburg State March 14 and 15, before a midweek match-up with Salem on March 18. The Senators will make the trip up to Wheeling to play West Liberty and Wheeling the following weekend, and play the first of two midweek games against former G-MAC rival Alderson Broaddus on March 25.
Â
A home weekend against Notre Dame (Ohio) and Urbana closes out non-divisional play, as the MEC is split into the North and South division. Teams play non-divisional opponents twice, and a four-game series against divisional opponents. D&E returns the trip to AB on April 1, before the Senators make the trip to Glenville State for four games. Following the first of two midweek doubleheaders with Cal U, D&E hosts Charleston on April 10 and 11, and a Wednesday home game against Salem on April 15. The Senators head to Concord the following weekend, before hosting Cal U in a Tuesday doubleheader on April 21. The final two weekends of the season bring West Virginia State and West Virginia Wesleyan to Harpertown Field to end regular season play.
Â
"The move to the MEC presents a new opportunity for a mostly new team in a new season," said head coach
Mason Heyne.
Â
"We return a talented core of upperclassmen, many of whom saw significant action as freshmen last year, and have added some young players in addition to a few impact transfers. The guys have all been working hard and have focused goals for this season," added Heyne.
Â
D&E will take on Mansfield on Friday, February 21st at 11:00 AM, in Glenville.
