PREVIEW: First-Year Senators Set to Compete at Inaugural MEC Wrestling Championships (Video)

ELKINS, W. Va. - The Mountain East Conference will conduct its inaugural wrestling championship this Saturday, Feb. 1, at the ASRC on the campus of West Liberty University. Wrestling is set to begin at 3 PM.

The championship will feature athletes from six schools (Davis & Elkins, Fairmont State, Notre Dame, UNC Pembroke, Urbana and West Liberty) competing in their weight class. By the end of Saturday, 10 weight class champions will be crowned, along with the league's first champion and the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. The champion of each weight class will be named First Team All-MEC, with the runner-up receiving Second Team honors. Third place will be named Honorable Mention.

Live video coverage will begin at 3 PM on the MEC Digital Network. After a break, the MEC will then stream the championship matches at a separate link.

The first-year Senators will bring a lineup of ten wrestlers to the meet, which will feature several nationally and regionally-ranked wrestlers. Noah Tarr enters the conference championships on a tear, boasting a 25-7 record this season while ranking among the nation's leaders in falls. At 133 pounds, Craig Cook is another Senator with 20 or more victories, entering the weekend with a 23-9 mark as a freshman. Working back from injury, Nicholas Natarcola has stepped up for D&E at 141 pounds despite running through a gauntlet of competition over the last few weeks, including the Kutztown Duals in January.

"It's about peaking at the right time, and I think we're motivated and moving in the right direction for this point in the season," head wrestling coach Jerry Boland said. "We've faced strong competition that'll prepare us for success on Saturday."

Following the MEC Championships, D&E will host their first two home meets of the season, taking on MEC foes Fairmont State (Feb. 8) and UNC-Pembroke (Feb. 14).
