ELKINS, W. Va. – After Hurricane Dorian forced cancellations throughout the Florida area, the Davis & Elkins volleyball team has made an alteration to its schedule, resulting in four matches being played at Virginia State on Friday and Saturday.
Originally slated to go to Embry-Riddle for the Bahama House Classic in Daytona Beach, Davis & Elkins was one of several institutions left scrambling to find a location to play their opening contests of 2019.
D&E opens its season on Friday, September 6 against Adelphi at 11:00 AM and caps day one of the Virginia State Invitational against NCAA Tournament qualifier Shepherd at 5:00 PM. The Senators will play two more matches on Saturday, September 7, beginning with a contest against Georgian Court at 1:00 PM and closing the opening weekend against host Virginia State at 5:00 PM.
Fifth-year head coach
Kylie Heyne will be guiding the Senators through their first season as a member of the Mountain East Conference in 2019. Despite being picked eighth in the MEC Preseason Poll, the Senators welcome back a plethora of depth and talent for the 2019 campaign.
Seniors
Kelly Smith (4.35 digs/set, 34 aces in 2018),
Lillie Mueller (94 blocks, 151 kills in 2018),
Kaitlyn LaCour (297 kills, 30 aces in 2018) and
Raleighanne Weaver (187 kills, 68 blocks) return to anchor the Senators after contributing all over the court in 2018.
The weekend will also serve as the first collegiate action for the five freshmen on the 2019 roster.
Davis & Elkins continues its early-season road swing the following weekend, competing in the Cal U Tournament on September 13-14.
