The Davis & Elkins College Women's Tennis team played a tough schedule on their trip to Florida last week, taking on three teams that finished the 2018 season in the Top 50 in DII in the country.
The Senators opened up with Florida Tech, and the Panthers were deep throughout the lineup in a 7-0 win.
Laura Vargas and
Valentine Schwartz each won four games in their singles matches, as Vargas lost 6-3, 6-1 at #2 singles, and Schwartz rallied in the first set, dropping the match 6-4, 6-0 at #4 singles.
Against the University of Tampa, who are currently receiving votes in the DII national poll,
Ester Bolmenas competed hard in her match, falling 7-5, 6-1 at #3 singles.
The Senators couldn't close out matches against the Eckerd College Tritons, falling 7-0 despite several very close results.
Taylour Newman won the first set of her match at #1 singles, but was unable to win another set, falling 5-7, 6-1, 10-5.
Laura Vargas pushed her first set to a tiebreaker at #2 singles in a 7-6 (3), 6-3 defeat.
Valentine Schwartz battled to a 6-4, 6-4 loss at #4 singles, and teamed with
Karin Rosario in a 6-4 decision at #2 doubles.
Against NAIA foe Southeastern University, the Senators picked up a big win at #1 doubles in the 8-1 loss.
Taylour Newman and
Ester Bolmenas capitalized on aggressive net play and clutch serving in an 8-5 win.
Against Embry-Riddle in the final match of the trip, the regionally-ranked Eagles were too much for the Senators, who won games in each singles matchup.
Julianna Singleton fell at #6 singles 6-1, 6-1.
The Senators have a long recovery before opening up GMAC play on Friday, March 22nd at defending conference champion Hillsdale College.
