Box Score ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins Women's Tennis team dropped its home opener to the University of Charleston 6-1 Thursday afternoon at the Thomas Tennis Center.
 
The Senators fell behind early, dropping the doubles point. Elise Simon and Taylour Newman fell to Kristine Gegeshidze and Katie Swann 6-2.
 
Ester Bolmenas and Valentine Schwartz fell in their doubles match to Elise Edwards and Megan William 6-3.
 
Simon had the only victory of the day for the Senators, a big victory as she knocked off Gegeshidze, who won the ITA Atlantic Region Championship. Simon defeated Gegeshidze 6-1 and then held on for a 7-6 (1) victory in the second set.
 
Laura Vargas went to a third-set tie breaker in her match. Vargas ultimately fell to Mathilde Simon 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
 
Newman dropped her singles match to Swann. Newman battled in each set, falling 6-3, 6-4.
 
The Senators will return to action on October 2 with a trip to Fairmont State. The match is set for 4 p.m. in Fairmont.
