ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Tennis team opened up its season this past weekend at the ITA Midwest Regionals, hosted by Grand Valley State University.
 
The Senators had four players compete in the opening event, which features individual and doubles tournament competition.
 
In the A Singles draw, Elise Simon defeated Odette Beagrie (Missouri-St. Louis) 6-4, 6-3 to open up her event. Simon would then fall in the round of 32 to No. 8 Anya Novikova (Indianapolis) 6-0, 6-3.
 
Taylour Newman would also compete in the A singles draw, falling in the first round to Laura Brito (Findlay) 6-0, 6-1.
 
In consolation play, Newman would win by a walkover against No. 4 Steph Ruston (Davenport) before falling to Clara Bascunana (Maryville) 5-7, 6-1, 10-4
 
Simon and Newman also played a pair of matches in the A Doubles draw. The duo fell to a team from Saginaw Valley State 8-2 before falling to a team from Grand Valley State 8-6 in the consolation bracket.
 
In the B Singles draw, Ester Bolmenas fell to Hanna Murphy (Davenport) 6-2, 6-4 in her opening match. In consolation play, Bolmenas fell to Astrid Ciellza (Wayne State) 6-2, 6-2.
 
Valentine Schwartz had a similar weekend in B singles, falling to Maria Kacalova (Walsh) 6-1, 6-2 in her opening match. In consolation play, Schwartz lost to Julia Formentin (Hillsdale) 6-4, 6-1.
 
In the B Doubles draw, Bolmenas and Schwartz fell in their opening match to Grand Valley 8-2. However, the duo would then defeat a Cedarville pairing 8-5 and a Hillsdale pairing 8-6, before falling to a group from Michigan Tech 8-6.
 
The Senators will now set their sights on team competition. D&E will take on Charleston on Thursday. The match is set for 3 p.m. at the newly resurfaced Thomas Tennis Center.
