Box Score ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Lacrosse team fell to Young Harris College 24-8 Wednesday afternoon at Nuttall Field.
In what started out as a very tight battle through the first quarter, the Senators fell behind on miscues in the second quarter and were unable to recover against the Mountain Lions.
The visitors took the early lead, scoring a pair of goals in the first 91 seconds to go up. However, the Senators responded 16 seconds later as
Zach Cotoni scooped up a ground ball off the face off and ran down the field, beating the goalie to cut the deficit in half.
Just 44 seconds after that, reigning G-MAC Player of the Week
Patrick Schneck scored to tie the game up at 2 less than three minutes into the game.
Young Harris would respond with the next two goals, but Jay Baumgarder would score his first of two goals at the 7:14 mark bring the deficit back to one.
Just seven seconds later, Baumgarder took a pass off a cleanly won faceoff by
Kyle Durec and Baumgarder added his second tally to tie the game at 4.
D&E would grab the lead 19 seconds later, completing a three-goal run in the span of 26 seconds, as Cotoni added his second goal of the game.
However, Young Harris would answer back with a goal in the final seconds of the first quarter to level things at 5.
The Senators would struggle defensively with several failed clearances and turnovers in the second quarter, as Young Harris capitalized and pulled away with an 8-0 period.
Young Harris would add four more goals before
Matthew Dyck got on the scoresheet midway through the third quarter. Dyck would add another goal early in the fourth with the man advantage.
Connor Shantz would also tally his first goal for the Senators in the fourth quarter.
Kyle Seago would stop 16 shots in the game, but was dealt the loss.
Young Harris was 1-3 with the man advantage, while the Senators were 1-4. The Senators did win the faceoff battle 19-18.
The Senators will return to action next Thursday as D&E has an 8-day break before playing Dominican on March 16. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Nuttall Field.
