ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Swim team opened its dual meet schedule with a 150-95 victory over Centre College, including multiple records, Saturday afternoon at the Myles Pool.
Freshman
Pedro Gaspar had a breakout home debut for the Senators, winning all three individual races he swam in, as well as a relay, while also setting three records on the day.
He opened the day with a win in the 100-Yard Backstroke, setting a new school record with a 53.70, breaking teammate
Aaron Strynar's mark of 54.77. Strynar would finish third in the event.
Gaspar would also set a Myles pool record in the 500-Yard Freestyle, as the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native won by over 14 seconds with a 4:44.10. Fellow freshman
Ricard Castan would take third in the event.
Castan also had a second-place finish in the 1000-Yard Freestyle, finishing with a 10:23.21.
Gaspar and Castan teamed up with
Parker Giles and
Javier Sanchez in the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay, setting a new Myles Pool record with a 3:18.42 for the victory.
Gaspar would also win in the 200-Yard Individual Medley with a 1:59.07, winning by almost nine seconds in a dominating performance.
Gavin Burnham finished third for the Senators in the event.
Giles nearly had a record of his own in his first event of the day. The freshman won the 100-Yard Butterfly with a 54.00, just .03 off the school record time. Burnham also took third in this event as well, just .32 seconds off second with a 57.73.
Like Gaspar, Giles would also pick up three individual wins in his Myles Pool debut. The Hanford, Californian won the 50-Yard Freestyle with a 22.33.
Kamren McKinney-Lyons would take third overall with a 23.58.
Giles would also win the 100-Yard Freestyle event, edging out a .06 second win with a 49.38 to make it a perfect 3-for-3 day. McKinney-Lyons finished third with a 51.95.
Not to be outdone, Sanchez also picked up three individual wins on the day, starting with a 1:00.83 in the 100-Yard Breaststroke. The sophomore also took claim to the 200-Yard Freestyle win with a 1:47.02. Strynar took third with a 1:53.14.
Strynar would also have a second-place finish in the 200-Yard Backstroke with a 2:04.71.
Sanchez wrapped up the individual events on the day with a win in the 200-Yard Breaststroke, touching in with a time of 2:14.15 to win by over six seconds.
Kalvin Spells took third overall in the event.
The Senators will return to action next Saturday with another dual meet at the Myles Pool. Davis & Elkins will face Urbana with the meet set for a 5 p.m. start.
