ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's and Women's Swimming programs combined for seven Myles Pool records and three victories in a double dual meet over California (PA) and Fairmont State Saturday afternoon.
The men's program set five of the pool records and defeated Fairmont State 124-80 to earn its fifth straight win. The women's program added its fourth and fifth victories of the year, including two pool records, with its double dual victories over California (PA) 107-97 and Fairmont State 114-82.
Saturday's meet was one of the fastest meets in Myles Pool history, as the three women's programs and two men's programs combined for 15 pool records in the 22-event meet.
Austin Pillado and
Javier Sanchez claimed two pool records each while
Sam Windham and
Brooke Bielecki also staked a claim to a pool record.
Pillado showed his versatility in the meet with a record in an endurance win in the 1000-Free, giving the pool its first time under 10 minutes with a 9:54.84. The win was part of a 1-2-3 sweep for the Senators as
Ryan O'Connell and
Christian Arrell took second and third.
Pillado then set another pool record in the sprint event of the 100-Free. The senior broke the 48-second mark with a 47.99 for his second of three wins on the day. He would close out his meet by leading the Senators to another 1-2-3 victory in the 500-Freestyle, finishing with a 4:54.99 ahead of teammates
Sam Windham and Arrell.
Windham had another second-place finish in the 200-Free event finishing just behind a pool-record finish from Fairmont's Alex Quintao. However, Windham would avenge the defeat and set his own pool record in the 200-Fly, beating Quintao with a 2:01.88.
Zayd Othman would take third for D&E in the 200-Fly.
Bielecki and Sanchez each won two races on Saturday. Bielecki first picked up a win in the 200-Free event, edging out a win by .68 seconds with a 2:00.14.
After a second-place swim in the 50-Free, Bielecki came back and edged out another close finish, the closest in pool history. Bielecki set a new pool record and beat Audrey Sweeney by one-hundredth of a second (.01), winning with a 54.77.
Sanchez claimed his first of two pool records in his first swim of his afternoon, winning the 200-IM with a 1:58.66. The win was Sanchez's eighth-straight victory in individual competition, dating back to D&E's meet against Malone on Oct 29.
However,
Aaron Strynar snapped Sanchez's win streak in the 200-Backstroke in the middle of the meet on Saturday, as Strynar won with a 2:01.46. The victory was one of Strynar's two top-three finishes on the day, as he also took third in the 200-Free.
Sanchez would bounce back to his winning ways in the 200-Breaststoke, closing out the individual races for the meet with a 2:12.06 for the final pool record of the day for D&E.
Vitoria Issaho dos Santos also picked up a victory for the Senators on Saturday, setting a pool record in the process, winning the 200-Backstroke with a 2:13.64. Issaho do Santos bested her own pool record by .17 seconds with the win. Fellow Senator
Kenya Paiz took second in the race.
Issaho dos Santos and Paiz would each grab a two more second-place finishes on the day. Issaho dos Santos swam to a second in the 1000-Free with a 11:21.08 and a second in the 500-Free with a 5:40.22.
Paiz would also finish second in the 200-IM with a 2:18.63 and a second in the 200-Breaststroke with a 2:36.00.
Kendall Williams,
Chris Swank and
David Funk would round out the top-three finishes for D&E in the meet. Williams swam to a third-place finish in the 200-Fly, touching the wall with a 2:34.66.
Swank and Funk went second and third in the 50-Freesyle. Swank swam a 22.55 and Funk finished third with a 23.35.
The Senators will now break for the Holiday period. D&E will return to action on January 13 in the first of a two-day meet against West Virginia Wesleyan for the Battle of the Hills. The meet is set for a 6 pm start on Friday at Myles Pool.
