LEBANON, Pa. – Davis & Elkins made a strong push in the second round of the NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Tournament that propel them into first place and the team of
Jordan Hyland,
Lewis Beeden,
Matin Eisa,
Evan Lewis, and
Jack Coleman put up another solid round on the final day to secure the Regional title and a berth in the National Championships.
At the end of eighteen holes, D&E trailed then leader Adelphi by five strokes. Le Moyne and the University of Charleston held the second and third positions, respectively. D&E's +14 round of 302 had them sitting at fifth place of the twenty teams competing. The top three teams earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, so while within striking distance, the Senators needed to make up some ground on Day Two. Beeden carded the team's lowest score of the day at 71 (-1).
The Senators were ten strokes better on Day Two, shooting a 292 (+4). The score was the lowest team round of the tournament and all five D&E players shot rounds in the seventies. The low round of the Senators vaulted them into the lead. Their +18 total led Le Moyne by four strokes. St. Thomas Aquinas and Fayetteville State were tied for third and eight strokes behind. Gannon and Indiana University of Pennsylvania both trailed D&E by thirteen strokes. Hyland carded the Senators' low round of the day at 70 (-2).
D&E held off strong advances by Fayetteville State and IUP on Day Three as the Senators shot a final round 298 (+10). Fayetteville State shot a final round 294 (+6) and IUP shot a final round 293 (+5). D&E's three-day total of 892 (+28) was enough to out-pace Fayetteville State (896, +32) and IUP (900, +36) and all three teams will advance to the NCAA Championships next week.
Gannon also had a strong showing in the final round (294, +6), but find themselves just outside the top three by one stroke. St. Thomas Aquinas and Le Moyne faltered in the final round and dropped out of the top three. St. Thomas Aquinas shot a final round 301 (+13) and ended the tournament +39 in fifth place. Le Moyne shot a final round 309 (+21) and ended the tournament +43 in sixth place.
Hyland was once again low scorer for D&E on Day Three with a two-under-par 70. His three-day total of 213 was second overall to St. Thomas Aquinas' Donte Groppuso by one stroke.
In addition to the top three team (Davis & Elkins, Fayetteville State, IUP) moving on to the NCAA Championships, the top two student-athletes not competing with a team will also advance. Groppuso of St. Thomas Aquinas and Tyler Birdd of Le Moyne will be competing as individuals. The NCAA Division II Championships will take place May 22-26 at Avalon Lakes Country Club in Warren, Ohio. The event is being hosted by the Mountain East Conference.
