Hyland Wins, Senators Dominate at West Liberty Invitational

Steubenville, OH. – The Davis & Elkins men's golf team picked up their first win of the fall season in emphatic fashion this week at the West Liberty Invitational Tournament, held at the Steubenville Country Club in Steubenville, Ohio. The team extended a 10-shot lead after day one to a 22-shot team victory overall, and senior Jordan Hyland picked up his fourth career victory coming from three shots back to win by three shots.

Day One

The first day had 36 holes scheduled to be played, and the men took the lead early and extended it throughout the tournament. Sean McAufield and Evan Lewis both had very solid opening rounds with one-over-par totals of 73, but it was Hyland who led the team with an even-par 72 in round one. Lewis Beeden rounded out the team scores with a 77 (+5).

Battling blustery conditions in the afternoon was where the Senators grasped the lead of the golf tournament with both hands. Lewis ground out his round to sign for a 74 (+2), which included three birdies, to lead the team in the second round of the day. Jack Coleman bounced back from a poor first round to shoot 75 (+3), in which he played his last four holes in two under par. Hyland also shot 75 (+3) and both McAufield and Beeden signed for an 80 (+8).

Day Two

With Evan Lewis and Jordan Hyland both sitting just three shots off the lead individually, and the team carrying a 10-stroke lead heading into the third and final round – it was sure to be a fascinating day on the course. Both Lewis and Hyland would be within touching distance with seven holes to play, Lewis would play those in even par while Hyland carded four birdies and three pars to leap into the lead and claim another victory. He signed for a 70 (-2) and a 217 (+1) total for the tournament to win by three.

Lewis signed for a 74 (+2) for the round and was third place on his own at five-over-par, notching back-to-back top-three finishes. Coleman continued his bounce back and recorded a 71 (-1) in round three which included five birdies. Beeden and McAufield also bounced back after struggling in round two, as they both shot 73 (+1) with three birdies on their scorecards.

The team finished with a fantastic 287 (-1) total in round three, the lowest team score on the day by 12 shots, allowing them to cruise to a 22-shot margin of victory.

D&E fielded freshman Leonardo Turra as an individual this week. Leo had rounds of 75 (+3), 81 (+9), and 80 (+8) to finish in a tie for 30th place at 20 over-par.
