Senators Golf Season Concludes at D2 NCAA Championships

DEARBORN, Mich. – The Davis & Elkins College men's golf team has completed their spring season and 2021-2022 year at the NCAA D2 National Championship. Overall, it was a disappointing finish to a good season for the team at TPC Michigan, finishing in 17th place of the 20 teams competing.

Round One
In the opening round on Monday, out in the first wave of tee times, the Senators got off to a nervy start with early mistakes. The play was in damp cooler conditions on a very soft course after heavy rainfall overnight and the team struggled to bounce back from their bad start. Jordan Hyland led the team with a 76 (+4) playing his final 13 holes in 1 over par after a rough opening stretch to his tournament. Sean Addie followed with a 77 (+5), playing his final 8 holes in 1 under par after struggling to 6 over par through 10 holes. Sean McAufield and Evan Lewis both finished with a 78 (+6). McAufield struggled on the front nine but bounced back well with birdies on the 10th and 11th, he shot an inward nine of 37 to finish his round. Lewis had the best front nine of the team, with a 1 over par 37 but a triple bogey on hole 12 derailed his round and he finished at +6.  The team finished with a 309 (+23) total score in round one.

Round Two
Needing to post a good score to run up the leaderboard and get closer to the match play advancing spots, the team would need to cut out the mistakes and make more birdies. Unfortunately, the tough course conditions and windy didn't allow for many great scores. Again, Jordan Hyland led the team with a very solid round of 73 (+1), Hyland reached the turn in 38 (+2) and added three birdies on his 1 under par back nine to finish out his round. However, the rest of the team would struggle to get anything going. Lewis finished with a 7 over par 79 and both McAufield and Patrick Smith finished with 80 (+8). With the team unable to improve on their day one total and sitting in 18th place, they would play in the first wave of tee times in the final round.

Final Round
D&E saved their best to last with three players recording the lowest score of their tournament, finishing the tournament with a 301 (+13) and moving up one spot into 17th position. Freshman Sean McAufield closed out his first year in style, shooting a 1 over par 73, including back-to-back birdies on holes 12 and 13. Evan Lewis finished with a 74 which included a great bounce-back brace of birdies on 14 and 15 after a difficult stretch on 12 and 13. Sean Addie had 2 double bogeys on his card but countered them with 3 birdies to sign for a 75 (+3). Jordan Hyland finished with a 79 of 7 over par that included three birdies.
