ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College Head Baseball Coach Justin Salge has announced the addition of Tyler Oertle to the Senators' coaching staff as the program's Battery Coordinator.
Oertle brings collegiate coaching experience, a strong background in baseball and kinesiology, and more than a decade of professional experience in law enforcement to the Davis & Elkins program.
"I'm extremely excited to bring Tyler onto our staff as our Battery Coordinator," said Salge. "He possesses an extremely strong baseball background, but what stood out to me was his ability to connect with people. He's personable, approachable, and has a natural way of building relationships, which will be critical for the development of our pitchers and catchers. Tyler is motivated; he moved across the country for this opportunity. He is unafraid of challenges and that is exactly what we're looking for as we build this program."
Oertle joins Davis & Elkins after serving as an assistant baseball coach at Gavilan College. During his time with the program, he specialized as a catching coach and helped develop several catchers who went on to further their playing careers. He also assisted with recruiting, fundraising, baserunning, fielding and hitting development, served as a first-base coach, threw batting practice and reviewed opposing scouting reports to assist with game-day planning.
Oertle also implemented and oversaw the baseball team's weightlifting and conditioning program at Gavilan College.
As Battery Coordinator at Davis & Elkins, Oertle will focus on the development of the Senators' pitchers and catchers while assisting with the overall organization and administration of the NCAA Division II program. His responsibilities include recruiting, evaluating student-athletes, assisting with practices, scouting and game preparation, fundraising initiatives and communication with student-athletes, coaches, staff, parents and alumni.
Prior to returning to coaching, Oertle spent more than a decade as a Sheriff Correctional Deputy and Internal Affairs Investigator with the Santa Clara County Office of the Sheriff. As an Internal Affairs Investigator, he worked as part of a team investigating and documenting policy and procedure violations, conducting interviews, reviewing evidence and handling complaints made to the Internal Affairs Unit.
As a Sheriff Correctional Deputy, Oertle was responsible for maintaining order and security within a jail setting, supervising incarcerated individuals and providing care, custody and control. He also served as a Jail Training Officer, training new deputies in the basic daily operations of the profession.
Oertle earned an Associate of Arts degree in kinesiology from Gavilan College and a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in kinesiology from the University of the Southwest.
His certifications include Performance Enhancement Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, CPR/First Aid/AED and Tactical Medical for First Responders. He also holds additional certifications in internal affairs, crisis intervention, adult corrections and other areas of law enforcement.
Outside of coaching, Oertle is a father of two and a strong proponent of autism awareness.
Oertle now joins Salge and the Senators as Davis & Elkins continues preparations for the upcoming baseball season.
