Box Score ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins dropped a Mountain East Conference matchup to the University of Charleston, 15-9, Saturday afternoon during their annual Code Red game at Nuttall Field.
Charleston used a dominant fourth quarter to pull away, outscoring the Senators 5-0 over the final 15 minutes after a tightly contested first three periods.
Davis & Elkins showed early momentum, jumping out to a 4-1 lead midway through the opening quarter. Goals from Morgan Rogers, Alexia Gonzales, Savannah Quave and Emmalyn Whyte sparked the fast start, with the Senators controlling possession and capitalizing on early opportunities.
Charleston responded quickly, closing the first quarter on a 3-0 run to tie the game at 4-4.
The Senators regained control in the second quarter, taking a 7-6 lead late in the half behind goals from Emelia Johnson, Gonzales and Rylee Anderson. D&E's defense held firm through much of the period, and the team carried a one-goal advantage into halftime.
The third quarter featured multiple momentum swings, including a 7-7 tie early in the period. Charleston eventually built a 10-8 lead, but Quave's third goal of the game with 1:22 remaining cut the deficit to 10-9 heading into the final quarter.
Charleston scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, led by Madison Partridge and Emilee Franklin, to secure the conference victory.
Quave led Davis & Elkins with three goals and one assist, while Gonzales added two goals. Anderson contributed a goal and an assist, and Rogers, Johnson and Whyte each found the back of the net. Mackenzie Mullen added a strong all-around effort for D&E, finishing with four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Megan Bauer made 13 saves in goal for the Senators, while Daelyn Hardnack added two saves in relief.
Charleston was paced by Partridge's four goals and one assist, while Sylvi Jenner and Franklin each added three goals.
The Golden Eagles held advantages in shots (38-28) and draw controls (14-12), helping control possession down the stretch.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Wednesday, April 22, traveling to Frostburg State for a 5 p.m. Mountain East Conference matchup.
