Box Score 2 NUTTER FORT, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins College baseball team dropped both ends of a nonconference doubleheader to Salem University on Saturday afternoon at Frank Loria Memorial Field. The Tigers took the opener 7-2 before completing the sweep with a 10-0 victory in game two.
Game One: Salem 7, Davis & Elkins 2
Davis & Elkins struck first in the opening inning. Kenny Capria reached base and later scored when Carsan Strolla lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Senators a 1-0 lead.
Salem responded in the bottom of the second inning with four runs despite recording just two hits. Max Castro tied the game with an RBI single before Joe Wintermute followed with an RBI ground-rule double. The Tigers added two more runs in the frame after being hit by pitches with the bases loaded to take a 4-1 advantage.
The Senators kept Salem off the board through the middle innings before the Tigers extended their lead in the sixth. Reese Rinna delivered a three-run double to push the Salem lead to 7-1.
Joel Wise provided the final offense for Davis & Elkins in the seventh inning, launching a solo home run to left field.
Wise finished 1-for-3 with the home run and an RBI, while Capria, Zach Calef-Boring, Mason Brenneman and Dylan Leadbetter each added a hit for the Senators.
Kyle Ball took the loss on the mound for Davis & Elkins, allowing four runs across two innings. Jeston Showalter and Carson Gorby combined for three scoreless innings in relief.
Game Two: Salem 10, Davis & Elkins 0
Salem jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning. Brandon Hoftijzer highlighted the frame with a two-run triple before Aaron Forbes added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
The Tigers extended their advantage with a run in the second inning after a Davis & Elkins throwing error and added two more runs in the third to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Salem added a sacrifice fly in the fourth before plating three runs in the sixth inning to close out the scoring.
Kyle Ball and Brody Rumon recorded the Senators' two hits in the contest, with Ball tallying a double.
Kenny Capria took the loss for Davis & Elkins after allowing six runs (five earned) over three innings. Andy Bailer, Dallas Rasmussen, Jack Murphy and Bronson Ferencak all appeared in relief.
Jackson Thoma earned the win for Salem after tossing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts while allowing just two hits.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Sunday, March 15 with a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Point Park at Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
