BRISTOL, Tenn. — Davis & Elkins wrestling posted several individual wins across the brackets Sunday at the King University Open, gaining early-season experience against a large regional field.
At 141 pounds, Jose Zavala opened the day against Liberty's Sebastian Cambray, dropping a 7-1 decision in the first round. Teammate Benjamin McComas earned one of the Senators' strongest performances at the weight, collecting a fall in 1:19 over Liberty's Nicholas Schmucker and advancing through multiple rounds in the consolation bracket.
At 149 pounds, Logan Powell put together one of the strongest overall performances of the day for the Senators. After dropping his opening match to UNC Pembroke's David Coptsias, Powell responded with a run through the consolation bracket, earning multiple wins to advance into the placement rounds. He closed the day with a sixth-place finish.
At 157, Geovani Santos delivered one of the most productive days for D&E, notching both a major decision and a technical fall as he advanced on the championship side before being edged in a semifinal bout.
In the 165 bracket, Mat McNeil earned a 5-4 decision to move forward in the consolations and closed the day with a competitive effort in one of the event's deeper weight classes.
Liam Young added another close decision win for the Senators at 174 pounds, taking a 4-3 match in the consolations.
D&E also picked up bonus points at 184, where Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro recorded a 17-1 technical fall and later added a 19-13 decision in a high-scoring match to continue advancing through the bracket.
The Senators return to action on Saturday, Nov. 22, when they travel to Williamsport, Pa., for the Penn College Duals.
