BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Davis & Elkins'
Viktor Yanev put up a strong showing in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship match, finishing as the runner-up after falling to top-seeded Jorge Perez of Charleston on Sunday. This is the third consecutive ITA singles title for Perez. Despite the 6-1, 6-1 result, Yanev's performance throughout the tournament showcased his resilience and talent on the court.
Perez, who will advance to the ITA National Championship Cup in Rome, Ga. next month, delivered a powerful performance, keeping Yanev on the defensive with his aggressive groundstrokes. However, Yanev showed determination, holding game points in the first two games and later securing a hold of serve to bring the match to 1-3 before Perez went on a strong run to claim the set.
"Viktor had a terrific tournament and has nothing to be ashamed about," said head coach Mark Walters. "His opponent never really let him into the match today, but Viktor tried different tactics and kept fighting. Sometimes, it's just about the other player having a dominant day. Hats off to Perez, and Viktor will be back to try again next fall."
Yanev's impressive run through the tournament proves he's a player to watch as he looks forward to future competitions.
