Buckhannon, W.Va – Davis and Elkins College split a pair of tennis matches with Bluefield State here Sunday afternoon, with the Women winning 4-1 while men fell 1-4. The D&E women raised their record to 5-7 overall, and the men drop to 5-11 on the year.
Liebe Oosthuizen continued her solid play, winning her third straight match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over BSU's Amy Van Craenenbroeck. Oosthuizen went 3-0 on the week in singles including wins over Fairmont State and Salem on the road. Andreia Semeano was also victorious in her return from an injury, winning both singles and in doubles with partner
Chavana Sreenath.
The Senator men got off to a fast start against the Big Blues by claiming the doubles point, but two losses in super breakers allowed BSU to comeback and claim the win. The doubles teams of
Sean Maphosa and
Mauro Cupelli, and
Duarte Correia and
Filippo Buffo each won their doubles match to give the Senators the early 1-0 lead heading onto singles.
Duarte Correia and
Anthony Martins each took their matches to a super tie breaker before falling in tightly contested decisions.
Both teams return to the courts this week against West Virginia State, with the women scheduled to play in Buckhannon on Wednesday at 10am, and the men in Charleston on Sunday. Both squads will travel to Frostburg State on Saturday for a conference double header.
