Raleigh, N.C. – The Senators had a select group accepted into the elite field of the Raleigh Relays, arguably the best distance meet on the east coast this past Thursday night.
Leading the way in one of the best track performances in D&E history was Junior
Jan Thewes who ran a NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 9:02.02 in the 3000m Steeplechase.
Thewes finished 4
th in his heat only behind division one runners from Michigan State, University of Tennessee and University of Penn. Thewes was the 3
rd highest finishing NCAA D2 runner in the entire field of 70 finishers spread out over 5 heats.
Thewes' time is currently 8
th in all of NCAA D2 and 1
st in the Region and MEC. It also broke his own school record by nearly 10-seconds. Thewes will be watching the NCAA performance list as the season unfolds hoping to both better his time but also hoping his current time stays within the top 18-24 which would keep him in position to qualify for the NCAA Championships at the end of May in Emporia, Kansas.
Both
Jackson Gibson (3:52.24) and
Carter McKenna (3:53.88) ran strong races in the loaded 1500m fields. Both finished in the middle of the field of 200 plus runners competing in 15 heats beating division one runners from University of Georgia, Wake Forest, Duke, Dartmouth, Brown, among many other division one programs.
Gibson finished as the 10
th highest and McKenna as the 14
th highest Division 2 runners in the entire field of 15 heats (208 runners).
