BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The Davis & Elkins tennis teams started their fall competition season with mixed results at the rain-shortened Bobcat Bash Invite hosted by West Virginia Wesleyan this past weekend.
Originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, the second day of the event was pushed to Wednesday after Saturday was rained out. Rain washed out Wednesday as well and the second half of the tournament was eventually cancelled.
The Senators came away with doubles wins in the B Flights of the men's and women's play despite not getting to finish the lower groupings. The singles portion of the event was eventually cancelled due to the poor weather conditions.
On the men's side,
Vinicius Azeredo and
Filippo Buffo paired up to take wins over duos from Fairmont State and West Virginia Wesleyan in Flight B, while freshmen
Liebe Oosthuizen and Wies Kerstholt turned the same trick in women's play.
Eloise Hutton and
Cara Long also upset a tandem from Fairmont State, triumphing in a tiebreaker for 7-6 win. Both of D&E's A Flight entries each lost a pair of matches to Charleston and Fairmont State, respectively. Overall the Senators went 4-5 in men's play and 3-3 in women's matches before the rain set in.
"Overall, we our freshmen and new players did a nice job putting balls in play consistently, as well as taking chances at the net," said head coach
Mark Walters, who enters his first full season with the Senator program. "The goal in an early season event like this is to shake off the nerves, travel a little, and see some new faces. We are really just trying to get our feet wet, learn the opponents, and see what kind of competitors we can be in live play. Our new kids did well, and that should help us get into our matches next week at the ITA Regional."
